My MA work was based around two ideas: first, illustration of some of Tolkien's work (and various themes); second, exploring the means of combining word & image in graphic design/illustration context: image only (illustration), text only (typography/design), image with caption; embedded text. This last was innovative: developing the idea of an illustration of a text containing the actual text being illustrated (embedded in the image) at points in an image where text normally appears (eg in a photograph of a road, a road sign, with the directions changed to the text being illustrated). Thus the text was subverted to fit the scene illustrated. In last six years, as technology has progressed to facilate this approach, it has become more widespread in design, advertising & broadcast. |
