Digital drawing, more widely known as digital painting, is the process of creating an image using a digital pen on a graphics tablet, typically in a program like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. The artist uses the pen to place (ie draw or paint) pixels using various tools provided by the software (eg airbrush, paintbrush etc). The resulting images can achieve high levels of realism or other effects the artist desires. In addition, graphics tablets are invaluable when using programs like Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand. Manufacturers of graphics tablets include Wacom and Nisis.
The technique is popular with illustrators, digital artists, concept artists and digital matte artists. There are many online fora showcasing their work, such as CGchannel, GFXartist or CGtalk
I prefer the term digital drawing, as - in my approach at least - the technical process is more akin to drawing than it is to (traditional) painting. In other words, you can't paint without paint, but you can draw with pixels.
